My dear client, Faiza, wrote this poem about our coaching journey together. When I first got it, I cried.
How could her words so beautifully express what I feel deep in my heart for you, Beautiful? I'm sharing the poem for you to savor (for context, Ya Allah translates to Oh God/The Divine).
As you read, imagine yourself standing at the crossroads and that I'm meeting you.
Ya Al Afuw
You lay out gifts for me
like a treasure trail,
each one tailor-sewn stitch by stitch
to hug the specific contours of my soul.
I was standing at the crossroads
when the laughing woman came to me--
like a miracle.
She recognized my soul
it was so like hers
she had lived the same pain once
mirrored the same sorrows.
Where I saw rotted fruit
the laughing one saw
only a golden kernel
a secret fire yearning to be unleashed.
The curve of her smile
told me a story--
It began like this:
There once was a girl who unearthed
the black seeds buried
in the crevasses of her heart.
She traced their veined branchings
and unknotted each
delicate choking rootlet.
How did she do it?
I whispered in despair.
Surely such a thing is impossible.
Dwell on all those that have wronged you,
the laughing one said.
Think of all they have done.
Then tell them thank you
and I forgive you
and say also I am sorry
and if your intention is true,
say to those that have wronged you--
I love you.
Then draw a line through their story
and step into your own.
soul sweetened with contentment,
stop hesitating on the shore
dabbling in the foam.
Dive into the soughing depths of the ocean.
Dye yourself with the colors of Allah
until your nobility is bejeweled with His nobility
and your hand is a hollow reed flute
its fire ever ready to be ignited with Divine breath.
When diverging paths confuse you,
remove the I from your decision.
The cold fog will lift.
The way then is clear--
the path on which the water is sweet
and the sunshine is warm
and blessings rain upon you
like cherry blossoms
in the breeze.
What do you feel in this moment, Beautiful? Reply and share one word that describes it, with me.
This poem was meant for you to read in this very moment.
